Bibliographical Definitions

NOTE
The complete data is normally recorded only in the original language data entry.

FAMILY NAME
We have recorded the family name of the author as it appears on the front page. In the case of a double name (especially for women using both their maiden name and their married name), we have entered two entries with internal references.

FIRST NAME
We have recorded the first name of the author as it appears on the front page. In the case of a double name (often in two different languages) we give both.

BOOK TITLE
Given as spelled on the cover page but with adjustment for proper use of capitals (especially for French texts).

THE SIGN
// …. // indicates that the title is given in another language.

SUB TITLE
Given as spelled on the cover page.

SUB TITLE 2
If there is a second subtitle of the text it will be listed under this heading.

BOOK IN HLRI
Indicates whether or not the book is available in the HLRI collection.

I.S.B.N.

B.N.
Bibliothèque Nationale (Paris) code number.

NUMBER OF PAGES
The number of the pages of the text are specified when known.

GENDER
Identifies the gender of the subject of the text. If the author is writing about his or her experiences their gender will be distinguished. In some searches gender indication might not appear because the book might include a multitude of testimonies within the text.

LANGUAGE
Given the language of the text recorded. If the text exists in different languages, each language version is recorded separately. The presence of a translator will indicate that the text is not offered here in the original language.

DATE RANGE
The researcher can choose which publication dates to search beginning from 1933.

TRANSLATOR
Given even if the translation is done by the author him/herself.

PUBLISHER
As much as possible, we referred to the first edition.

DATE OF PUBLICATION
As much as possible, we referred to the first edition. The abbreviation s.d. (sine data) signifies that no official date is indicated. A date between straight brackets [19XX] indicates an unofficial date, meaning a date found through outside research. Additionally, for French books, we use the date of the dépôt légal (the National Library’s official deposit date) as the date of publication. Because this may not correspond to the copyright date, both dates will be provided. Books in any language for which the date of publication does not match the copyright date will have both dates listed under “Date of publication”. After searching for a specific title, see the “note” section at the bottom of the page for more copyright information.

PLACE OF PUBLICATION
As much as possible, we referred to the first edition. In case of multiple places of publication, we limited ourselves to the main ones. The abbreviation s.l. (Sine loco) signifies that no official place is indicated. A place between straight brackets [XXXXX] indicates an unofficial place, meaning a place found by outside research.

COUNTRY OF PUBLICATION
Indicates the country in which the text was first published.

For example, an author interviewed a survivor and wrote down his/her story, or the author published the diary of a survivor, etc.

NARRATIVE RECONSTITUTED BIOGRAPHY
Indicates a survivor’s biography made by someone else but based on documents and personal quotes. For the purpose of annotations, we use the subject of the reconstituted biography as the author.
